ABATCC Sample Letter 1

The Honorable (name of Congressman/Senator)
U.S. House of Representatives
U.S. Senate

Dear Congressman (name),
or Dear Senator (name),

As federal employees and parents of an autistic child we urge you to support an effort currently underway to have federal health insurance guidelines amended to include coverage of a costly, but effective therapy for the treatment of autism.

The therapy in question, Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), administered on a one-on-one basis for 20 to 40 hours per week, is not currently addressed in OPM guidelines, and therefore not at all or not adequately covered by insurance providers within the Federal Employee Health Benefit system. As a matter of fact, the entire FEHB Handbook contains only one (!) general reference to autism, which by itself indicates that it urgently requires updating.

ABA therapy is recommended and supported by the Surgeon General, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Research Council, to name a few. Also, numerous studies and reports have shown its long-term cost benefits.

In addition, ABA therapy coverage is already mandated by some US states, and extended by a number of companies in the private industry.

Separate appeals to include ABA therapy coverage in federal health insurance guidelines have already been sent to OPM by Representatives Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Mike Doyle (D-PA), co-chairs of the Congressional Autism Caucus, as well as by John Gage, National President of the American Federation of Government Employees. Their letters can be viewed at www.abatcc.solvethepuzzle.org.

We are hopeful that you, too, will call on OPM to take immediate action in this crucial matter.
